At South Haringey Junior School on a Thursday
afternoon, after getting the kids home, the school gym becomes
a haven of relaxation. Staff, parents and people from the neighbourhood come together for a Yoga class.
Chandni Patel of the Asian Carers Association set up yoga classes at South Haringey Junior School in 2004. Sarra Whicheloe and Astra Deva
were the regular teachers for this mixed ability group, including those with special needs. Chandni's demise in 2006 was a great loss for
the local community and especially her husband and son. She was a key figure in bringing people together in activities from Indian Classical Music
for children, to Dance and Yoga. Her vision for social integration and her wish to introduce all kinds of people to the therapeutic qualities of
yoga was the impetus behind setting up Acorn Yoga Project.
By November 2006 Acorn Yoga Project received
support from Health for Haringey to re-establish the yoga class. Sarra Whicheloe continues to run the classes, providing a professional level of
yoga teaching to the local community
